    Singapore Airlines extends Krisflyer Elite and PPS Club status for another year

    Krisflyer Elite Miles and PPS Club Reserve Values will also get another year’s validity

    Singapore Airlines announced last week that it will be further extending the status for KrisFlyer and PPS Club members, due to the continued impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and the resulting uncertainty over travel plans for its frequent flyers.

    KrisFlyer and PPS Club status due to expire between March 2021 and February 2022 will now be automatically extended from between March 2022 and February 2023.

    On top of this, Singapore Airlines has also made additional concessions, such as PPS Reserve Value extension and Elite Miles rollover to provide subsequent tier renewal support.

    KrisFlyer Elite status extension

    If your existing KrisFlyer Elite Silver or Elite Gold membership expires between March 2021 and February 2022, your membership will be automatically renewed for another year. This is the case for all members even if you are unable to accrue the usual Elite Miles required, which will be the case for most members this year given the current travel outlook.

    This is on top of the first status extension applied by the airline in April 2020.

    This new support will supersede the earlier initiative announced on 1st September 2020, where members will be credited with 50% of the required Elite miles to assist with qualification between March 2021 to February 2022.

    KrisFlyer Elite Miles will be rolled over for another year

    To give members another boost to maintain their status, KrisFlyer will also roll over Elite Miles earned in the current membership year (with a start date of March 2020 to February 2021) over to their next membership year. This includes Elite Miles earned through flying (if you have been flying at all), and through non-air promotional activities that Singapore Airlines have pushed out last year.

    This is how the Elite Miles will be credited:

    • At the end of your current membership year, your Elite Miles will be reset to zero at the beginning of your next membership year.
    • The Elite Miles earned in the current yea will be re-credited within two months.
    • Each KrisFlyer Elite member will be eligible for a one-time re-crediting of Elite miles.
    • Only Elite miles accrued within your membership year (with membership start date from March 2020 till February 2021) will be re-credited.
    • If you are currently a KrisFlyer Elite Silver member and you get upgraded to KrisFlyer Elite Gold tier before the KrisFlyer Elite Silver membership end-date, you will also be eligible for a one-time re-credit of Elite miles within two months of the upgrade date.

    It’s all a bit confusing, but here’s an example:

    You are currently a KrisFlyer Gold Elite member, with your membership cycle beginning in June 2020. Between June 2020 and May 2021, you earned 5,000 Elite Miles. When June 2021 comes around, you get a free year of Gold Elite status, and you will also receive the 5,000 Elite Miles re-credited into your account.

    PPS Club membership extension

    In a previous renewal support programme announced in September 2020, only 50% of the PPS Value was due to be credited for PPS Club members with tier renewal end dates through August 2021, so existing PPS and Solitaire PPS Club members would have to earn the other 50% within the year prior to their status expiring.

    Singapore Airlines have now upped the support, giving 100% of the value required to ensure that members get at least another year of PPS Club membership, on top of the previous one-year extension.

    This is happening in two parts: for those who have already gotten their one-year extension as of 8 Sep 2020, and for those who have yet to as of 8 Sep 2020.

    For those who have received their one-year extension as of 8 Sep 2020

    For members whose tier renewal dates have been extended to expire between March 2021 and August 2021, they will receive their PPS value in two tranches:

    One important thing to note: credited PPS value under this programme will not count towards the tracking of PPS value required to achieve PPS Rewards.

    PPS Reserve Value extension

    On top of giving the 100% PPS value, Singapore Airlines will also be extending the expiry date of all PPS Reserve Value members are currently holding.

    Members with Reserve Value expiring between March 2021 and February 2023 will have them all extended till February 2024. The extension will be processed only in March 2021.

    Final thoughts

    Even as the world rolls out vaccination programmes, the pandemic is not yet abating, which means that leisure travel is still a far way off.

    Singapore Airlines is definitely erring on the side of being generous, with this latest round of extensions offered to its frequent flyer members. This round of another one year extension, plus the rollover of Krisflyer elite miles and PPS Reserve Values also points to the fact that Singapore Airlines is expecting the lack of travel to persist for a while more.

    Amex-Krisflyer co-branded cardholders will earn up to 5.3 mpd on mobile wallet transactions, capped at S$250 spend

    American Express has launched a new offer for Krisflyer branded cardholders, offering 4 extra miles per dollar spent via mobile wallet.

    Details of offer

    Upon registration, each cardmember can earn 4 bonus miles per dollar spent, up to a cap of 1,000 bonus miles to be given per card. This translates to a spend cap of S$250.

    The promotion is only available through the American Express app under the “Offers” section, and limited to the first 10,000 registrations. Registration ends when all 10,000 registrations are taken or on 16 Aug, whichever is earlier.

    Based on the terms and conditions, the following modes of payment qualify as ‘mobile wallet’ spending:

    • Apple Pay
    • Google Pay on Android devices only (excluding payments made on iOS devices and Google Chrome)
    • Samsung Pay

    The bonus KrisFlyer miles should be deposited in your card account within five working days from the qualifying spend, but as always Amex will say that this “may take up to 90 days from the offer end date”.

    How to get the offer

    To register for the promotion, simply sign in to the American Express app (it’s very handy to have the app), and click on the “Offers” tab. Once there, save the offer and you are set to go.

    Note that Amex award miles per transaction at the above rates, rounded to the nearest mile.

    While Amex didn’t specify if offers are stackable, it’s unlikely you can stack the offers with other ‘evergreen’ promotions (e.g. Grab, Singaporeair.com) given that these platforms do not offer mobile wallet payments. You might want to try to stack them with other tactical promotions (e.g. Spend and Get) to see if you can double dip.

    And for American Express cardholders, earn bonus miles if you spend at least $180

    Most of us are probably not going to be doing any duty-free shopping in the near term, but you can at least scratch some of that shopping itch and earn some extra miles by shopping on KrisShop for now.

    The promo

    Between 12 and 26 May, KrisShop is dishing out 3 KrisFlyer miles per S$1 spent, instead of the usual 1.5 miles. Needless to say – you will need to be a Krisflyer member first to earn the miles.

    This promotion is only valid for purchases made on KrisShop.com, and does not extend to inflight purchases or purchases via the KrisShop order form (not that you’ll be able to do so anyway given SIA has done away with in-flight duty free sales for now).

    The minimum spend for free local delivery has also be lowered from S$100 to S$50.

    Note that you will be awarded the usual number of miles first, with the bonus miles coming in 6 to 8 weeks after 26 May.

    Additional miles for Amex cardholders

    For those paying with American Express cards, you will earn the following extra miles:

    • 500 miles for min spend of S$180, or
    • 1000 miles for min spend of S$350

    The above bonus miles are awarded on a per transaction basis, and customers can only earn either bonus (but not both, i.e. if you spend S$350 you get 1000 miles, not 1,000 + 500 miles). Based on the promotion terms of conditions, note that the S$350 ‘nett’ has to be exclusive of tax:

    Nett spend is calculated based on the portion paid on your American Express card, excluding payment made with KrisFlyer miles, vouchers, shipping and taxes.

    All American Express cards, not just the SIA co-branded ones, are eligible for this promotion.

    Final thoughts

    Given that most of us are not going to spending on airfares anytime soon, this is indeed quite a good initiative to capture some revenue through non-traditional streams for airlines.

    This promo came also at a right time, given that most of the non-essential shops in Singapore are closed, forcing most people online to purchase items such as electronics, wines and other goods.

    I’ll be definitely taking advantage of this promo, so act fast if you are thinking the same.

    Covid-19: Airlines and hotels extend elite status for select members

    Several airlines frequent flyer and hotel loyalty programmes have announced membership extensions for affected members. Here are the details.

    LAST UPDATED: 29 April 2020

    With Covid-19 entering now heading into its fifth month soon and seeing no signs of easing, global travel has taken a severe beating. Airlines have made drastic cuts to their capacity, while hotels are reporting all-time low occupancy rates.

    Moreover, China now makes up one of the most significant group of members that any airline or hotel will want, so I will imagine any loyalty programme manager will want to ensure that this group returns to the fold once the crisis is over.

    Several programmes have announced expiry extensions for their elite members, almost most of them are targeted at members in Greater China. See below for details.

    Singapore Airlines

    [Updated] Singapore Airlines have announced a one-year extension for all KrisFlyer Elite Silver, Elite Gold, PPS Club and Solitaire PPS Club membership which are expiring anytime this year till Feb 2021.

    If you have already earned enough elite miles to renew your membership, note that you won’t get another free year (e.g. if your membership was going to expire in May 2020, and you have earned the pre-requisite 50,000 miles for Elite Gold for your next membership year of Jun 2020 to May 2021, you won’t get another free year till 2022).

    Note that despite the one-year extension, your accrued elite miles and PPS value will still reset on your anniversary month, so you will have to earn them again in the new year.

    All rewards (Elite Gold, PPS Rewards) that are expiring between July and Dec 2020 will also be extended until 31 Mar 2021.

    Cathay Pacific

    In an email sent to all members, Cathay Pacific informed Marco Polo Club members (separate from Asia Miles) of an extra Club Points credit given to every member, regardless of residency. It’s interesting that Cathay Pacific is not giving an automatic status extension, but instead be given three allotments of Club Points instead for the months of Feb, Mar and Apr 2020.

    The number of club points given to each member for month differs by status, as follow:

    • Green: 10 club points
    • Silver: 30 club points
    • Gold: 65 club points
    • Diamond: 140 club points

    All points will be credited by the end of each month. For those whose status expires in Feb, the points will be credited by end of Fen and the remaining points will be credited by the end of the subsequent months, depending on the new status qualified for.

    Qantas Frequent Flyer

    As Qantas grounds 90% of its international flights over the next two months, frequent flyers will be relieved to hear that Qantas will be extending all current elite members’ status for another year.

    Qantas will provide a 12-month extension on your current membership tier for all current Silver, Gold, Platinum and Platinum One members, starting with members whose membership year ends in March. Those with statuses expiring in March 2020 would have them extended till March 2021, with the last batch of members whose statuses originally expiring in Feb 2021 now extended till Feb 2022.

    Email confirming extension of QFF status

    Marriott Bonvoy

    Updated 29 Apr: Marriott Bonvoy announced on 8 Apr that it will (finally) be extending status earned in 2019 by 12 months.

    The status will normally expire in Feb 2021, but it will now expire in Feb 2022 instead, giving you an extra year. This will apply at all elite levels (i.e. Silver, Gold, Platinum, Titanium, Ambassador). The extended year of status will count towards lifetime status in the Bonvoy program.

    All points will not expire before Feb 2021, after which if it will only expire if there was no activity in the past 24 months (i.e. since 1 Mar 2019).

    Suite Night Awards will be have their validity extended until end 2021, while any free night awards expiring in 2020 will be extended until Jan 2021.

    Early in January, Marriott Bonvoy announced its extension policies on their Chinese social media platform WeChat on 22 Feb 2020. Members residing in Mainland China, Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan as of 1 Feb 2020 will be given the following extensions:

    • Members who qualified for elite status in 2019 will have their status expire by 28 Feb 2022 instead of 28 Feb 2021.
    • Any associated rewards or privileges with status will also be extended to expire 31 Dec 2021, instead of 31 Dec 2020.
    • All points will not expire before 28 Feb 2021. From 28 Feb 2021, normal expiry rules will apply.

    Hilton Honors

    Hilton Honors announced their provisions through their Chinese social media platform WeChat on 19 Feb 2020.

    Members whose residential address is listed in Mainland China, Macau, Hong Kong or Taiwan as of 19 Feb 2020 will be given effectively a year’s extension on their status.

    For those whose status was going to be downgraded on 31 Mar 2020 will have it extended through Mar 2021. Those that qualified in 2019 will have it until Mar 2022.

    World of Hyatt

    World of Hyatt will extend the status of all members in Asia Pacific for a year.

    Qualifying World of Hyatt Discoverist, Explorist and Globalist members with status expiring on 28 Feb 2020 will now be extended all the way to 28 Feb 2022, rather than a previously announced 28 Feb 2021.

    All Suite Upgrade Awards, Club Access Awards and Free Night Awards that are expiring in 2020 for qualifying members will also be extended through 31 Dec 2021.

    What is even better is that World of Hyatt is also working to evaluate tier and benefit extensions for members outside of Asia Pacific, but travels frequently to the Asia Pacific region. More information will be shared with qualifying members as it becomes available.

    IHG Rewards Club

    IHG Rewards Club has announced an extension for its elite members. Members with status, and who are residing in Mainland China, Hong Kong, Macau or Taiwan as of 17 Feb 2020 will be extended by a year. Points expiry will also be extended by at least a year.

    For those who have purchased the InterContinental Ambassador membership between 1 Jan and 30 Jun 2019, the membership validity and free weekend night voucher expiry has been pushed back by six months.

    Accor Live Limitless

    Accor announced 27 Feb 2020 status extensions for all members residing in Mainland China, Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan.

    All members with status expiring Dec 2020 will be extended through Dec 2021, while points expiring between 1 Feb 2020 and 31 Jan 2021 will be ‘halted’.

    Platinum and Diamond members with suite upgrade vouchers will have their validity extended until Dec 2021.

    GHA DISCOVERY

    In an email sent by Pan Pacific Hotel Group last week, the hotel will be extending the status of all Platinum and Black members until 31 December 2021.

    This appears to apply to all DISCOVERY members, regardless of which hotel chain they signed up with.

    Specifically for Pan Pacific members, members will be able to enjoy savings of up to 25% across all participating restaurants and bars at properties under the Pan Pacific Hotels Group from 1 Jun 2020.

    Singapore Airlines Spontaneous Escapes March 2020 offer now on

    Singapore Airlines have unveiled its offerings for the March edition of Spontaneous Escapes, with 55 destinations on sale.

    Surprisingly for a school holiday month, there seems to be a bumper crop of destinations on offer, although there are also plenty of restrictions. One possible reason for the extraordinary availability could be Covid-19, although China is (obviously) not on offer at all.

    The promotional mileage is 30% off the usual redemption rates, down from the one-off 51% discount last month.

    As usual, bookings must be made by 29 February 2020, for travel between 1 to 31 March 2020, barring blackout dates.

    What is good this month?

    If you still dare to travel in the month of March, you can consider the following:

    • Barcelona, Dusseldorf, Rome and Zurich are all available in Business Class available at 64,400 miles plus taxes.
    • San Francisco on SQ1/2, going at 66,500 miles each way. Note that SQ1/2 will be operating non-stop to/from SFO between 17 Feb and 28 Mar to avoid Hong Kong.
